What LawPay Actually Is

LawPay is a payment processing and billing platform built specifically for law firms. It handles credit, debit and eCheck payments while keeping trust and operating funds separated in line with ABA and IOLTA guidelines.

The platform is designed around legal billing workflows: firms can send branded payment requests, set up scheduled or recurring payments, and deposit funds into the correct account type automatically. It also integrates with most major practice management systems so charges can be posted back to a matter or invoice without double entry.

It fits less well for businesses outside legal services, or for firms that already have a general-purpose processor they are happy with and do not need trust-account safeguards.

Capabilities worth knowing about

  • Credit, debit and eCheck payments through a secure, PCI-compliant vault
  • Automated separation of trust and operating deposits
  • Branded payment requests, payment plans and recurring billing
  • Online client portal where clients can pay invoices directly
  • Next-business-day deposits for operating accounts
  • Integrations with Clio, MyCase, TimeSolv and other legal practice tools

Suits

  • •Firms that accept retainers, settlements or invoice payments online
  • •Practices that must keep client trust funds compliant
  • •Teams that want payments connected to their billing system

Strengths

  • •Built around legal trust-account rules from the ground up
  • •Fast, predictable settlement timing
  • •Wide integration library with legal software

Trade-offs

  • •Not a full practice management system on its own
  • •Per-transaction cost can add up at high volume
  • •Some advanced reporting requires the higher tier

Worth comparing before you sign

Most firms shortlist two or three systems. These come up most often alongside LawPay.

Clio Payments

Native to Clio Manage; convenient if you already live in Clio, but narrower outside that ecosystem.

Square

General-purpose processor with lower rates, but lacks built-in legal trust-account compliance.

Stripe

Developer-friendly and flexible, though trust-account workflows require custom configuration.
